Breaking Free
January ends just as it began: sobering and possibly heavy – but with plenty of potential for breakthrough. Mars, Mercury RX and Venus are all in Capricorn this week, pushing us to focus on the creation of long-lasting structure in our lives – whether it be relationships, friendships, careers or even pleasure practices. Pluto, Uranus and Chiron are also involved in the major transits of this week, bringing in plenty of raw, electrical emotions to work with.
For the first half of the week, the moon will be in Scorpio. During this last quarter phase in Scorpio, the Moon invites us to dive deep into her waters. This can translate into heightened intuitive states, mystical occurrences and deep psychological processing. Feelings of fear can be triggered during this time, and we should strive to get curious and sit with our feelings rather than attempt to suppress them. The goal here is to focus on pivoting where necessary, noting what may need to be set aside (or let go of) to make more room for the journey into the limitless potential of the New Moon next week.
On Monday Mars enters Capricorn, followed by Mercury’s continued backward spiral out of Aquarius and into Capricorn. Both our ambition and drive must now answer to Capricorn’s demand for maturity and sacrifice in favor of creating solid foundations. This may not be a process that produces immediately enjoyable results, but most things of true value are not built overnight.
With Mercury retrograding back into Capricorn and then meeting Pluto this week, we may be revisiting something that occurred between December 28 – January 2. Think back to what was going on for you around this time and be prepared to rethink your original plan or revisit a conversation. This can be an opportunity to gain deeper understanding and clarity around how you truly feel about the situation or person.
Mars will be in Capricorn from January 24 until March 6. We can take advantage of this time by rolling up our sleeves and doing what needs to be done, because we know in the end we will benefit from the difficult delay of instant gratification. We would be wise to reflect on what impression we are trying to leave on the world. What legacy do we want to create, and what work will be required to do that?
As the Moon wanes in Sagittarius toward the end of the week, the Sun and Chiron meet in a sextile aspect. This is a golden opportunity to take a moment to breathe and attempt to process what has transpired since the Cancer Full Moon on January 17. How are we working with the emotions that have recently been unearthed? This is a powerful time to acknowledge and validate any feelings of restlessness, tap into your creative expression and turn pain into art.
At long last, Venus will station direct on Saturday January 29, ending the retrograde cycle we have been in since December 19. What lessons have we learned about what we value? What is possible for us when we delay instant gratification and instead focus on long-lasting impact? What relationships have drastically transformed during this time? Now that Venus is direct, we may get to work aligning ourselves with the opportunities and relationships that are worthy of our time and energy. Once the Sun squares Uranus on Sunday, we’ll be ready to break free from the past and show up confidently in our own unique way.
